GPG230 Blog 12- Final Updates

GameLook.JPG

The first thing to mention about the Studio Game is that the look of the map and texture of the map has been changed as I felt that the current textures felt a bit off-putting.

I had added a simple gun reload animation for both the guns to at least give it the feeling that it is reloading whenever it runs out of ammo instead of the player simply waiting till they can shoot again.

On the topic of shooting, I had edited the Shooting Script, PlayerPickUp Script, Inventory Script as well as the Weapon Script. I also added the New Lava Gun Model but this time, the Lava Gun texture did not go missing.

I also edited the Multiplayer Aspect of the Game and added the name registration and login to work only for the Singleplayer part of the game as doing it for the multiplayer might cause bugs this late and that is something that I must avoid.

Finally, regarding the feedback that was received from game testing, I added a new scene for the singleplayer as well as one for the multiplayer. I kept them as two separate scenes and changed the UI for the multiplayer as well as added the main menu transition to both singleplayer and multiplayer.

This is the final update that I’m going to add to the main game as the very next day is going to be Sunday. I still don’t know what is going to happen on that day, all I can do is mentally steel myself for whatever is going to happen.

GPG230 Blog 11- Weapon Inventory System & Picture Hunting

This week has been all kinds of busy from the CIU side. It’s getting difficult to try and find the balance of working on both CIU and Studio. Especially considering the problem that we are currently facing for the CIU team.

Since Evan, our modeler, could not provide good pictures for using as characters for the card game, we all decided to get the characters from Shutterstock (Shutterstock.com, 2019), which is a site where we can basically get royalty free images. So it was tasked to me & Evan to find pictures for the bosses and characters of the game. Unfortunately, since Evan was extremely slow, I had to find the majority of the pictures which took up ONE ENTIRE DAY. So it’s safe to say why I feel like this. We also had to edit and remove some situations from the drive. I also added the final touches to my Dialectical Inquiry slideshow presentation, which I had proceeded to show the lecturer during class. It seems that she seemed to have liked it since the content was not only straight to the point, but I was the only person to not read directly from the slides!

As for the Studio side, I managed to create a Weapon Database script which was used for storing the weapon ID and stats and this was important as the next script which was the Weapon Inventory system would have taken the ID and stats into account. I also added the Weapon Pickup script which would allow the player to pick up the weapons that were stored in the database script, as long as they make contact with it and press a button.

Finally, I imported the Lava Gun that was made by a modeler into the game. It looks out of place among the textures of the game, but at this point, I really can’t be asked to change it. Besides, it looks good.

Just 1 week left of working time before week 12 hits, what will be happening during the day we were supposed to have showcase even I don’t know. If I didn’t feel the pressure before, I do now. Hopefully, things will work out.

GPG230 Blog 10- Preparation for Dialectical Inquiry & Poster Making

During this week, I focused on other aspects of the main studio game other than the game itself. Which was a needed break as I had gotten tired of looking and editing the same scene for the longest time. This time, I had focused on making the poster of the game. Though it was not needed as there would be no showcase this trimester, it was still needed for the facebook page.

Using Adobe PhotoShop (En.wikipedia.org, 2019), I created the design of the poster and within a day or two, was finished making it. While it may not be the best looking poster, I’m happy with how I managed to make it look with the effects and color grading.

BattleToEarn.jpg

The last thing that I had done from the studio side was redoing the Register User aspect of my PHP script. After I was done with editing it, it seemed to register the user to the online database and when called for in Unity using the Login function, the name would appear on the UI of the player and I am psyched for this.

Finally, for the CIU side of things, I had another meeting with the group where we discussed on how many things would be needed, such as how many dices were to be made, the number of boards we would make (we all settled on 2) and the placement of it all in the board.

I had also worked on the script of what I would be saying during the slideshow presentation of my Dialectical Inquiry. I removed all the paragraphs I had added to the slides, put them in the script and just filled the slide with pictures.

GPG230 Blog 9- CIU Meetup & Forcefield Effect Shader

This week, I managed to work on both CIU and Studio again so that’s a plus. I worked on the Shader Effect that I had promised for Studio and for CIU, I had started on the documentation of the different stats of the characters that we have.

For CIU, I had worked on properly documenting the stats of the characters which was going to show, their work level, their education level, the description of their background, the special ability that each one of them will possess which will revolve around what type of dice will be used. So far, the team loves it.

Speaking of the team, we decided to hold a meeting to talk about how the production of the product will take place. Anas, one of the group members took the responsibility of producing the board game and cards from his side as he knows someone who can make these things. The only thing he requested from our side was that we provide him with all the information that is to be placed on the specific items.

Finally, from the studio side, this week was focused on the ForceField Effect Shader which is part of my Learning Outcomes. It took me a while to make it, but I eventually managed to make it work and it looks pretty good.

ForceField.JPG

I managed to create the basic login system using PHP that will store whatever the player inputted in the database and when he wants to access it, it will display from the database to Unity. Unfortunately, it is still buggy, but I can get it to work soon.

I had also started research on the Terms & Conditions report that I had promised for my one of my Learning Outcomes.

GPG230 Blog 8- Slow Week But Still Progress

This week has been by the far, the slowest week I’ve ever had, simply in terms of work. I procrastinated during this week which did not feel right. But unfortunately, I could not keep my head on work for some reason. There was still progress, but I did have a break that lasted more than 2 days straight, which was a very bad time usage from my side. Quoting Napoleon Hill, “Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.” (BrainyQuote, 2019)

This entire week I only managed to do CIU related stuff, which was funny since there was no class this week as this was the break week. But the lecturer still managed to give us homework to do which was not just one assignment, but rather two. One was to work on a comic strip that would address the topic on “West and the Rest” which symbolizes jus how the people of the western side perceive other races to behave like as seen usually in films and other sources of info. The other was to make an audio recording of Transhumanism, which was something that took a while and some help from some colleagues of mine to do. But managed to complete it anyway.

The final thing that I managed to do this week was research and work more on the Dialectical Inquiry about Fandom & Subculture. I started making the slideshow presentation and was recommended to make it so that there were fewer words and more visually appealing slides.

The next coming week is where the game will be making by comeback hopefully.

GPG230 Blog 7- Situations/Boss Ideas & Joining Lobby Testing

For this week, in relation to the main game, I managed to work on and create a Joining Lobby Scene successfully. Now depending on how many players join the room, it will change accordingly. if one player joins the room, it will take them to the singleplayer scene and that will be it. However, whenever another player would join the room, it would take all the players present to a new scene to accommodate the players. This was a good pace and while I might not include the whole, taking them to a different scene, joining the room function is what I need. This was very simple to do by following the same steps as provided by the photon engine documentation. (Doc.photonengine.com, 2019)

PhotonEngine.JPG

As for my CIU part, I managed to create a whole lot of different ideas for different types of situations that would happen in the work field, ranging from both good and bad and how it would affect the player. This would serve as the extra cards that the player would have to draw and see what they get. Another thing was the boss cards, I have about 10 different ideas for the bosses and I seem pretty happy with how they behave. I managed to post this to the group and they all said that it looks promising and while most of the situations I made will be included, the bosses needed tweaking.

I thought this week was going very well. Unfortunately, my laptop screen started acting up again by being completely static for a bit before it goes to normal, this, of course, freaked me out but I can’t afford to have this impede the work. Now, it’s too late to try and repair this screen as I have no idea how long it would take, so for now, I will have to bear with it.

GPG230 Blog 6- Dialectical Inquiry Research & Explosion Maybe?

This week has seen some progress compared to the last, for both the CIU project as well as the Studio Project. While not as productive as last week, I think that this week was just a “slow” week.

First things first, from the CIU side of things, I worked on not only the group project, which was the card game but also my solo dialectical inquiry, which revolved around the topic of  Fandom & Subculture and the topic I had taken was called “Analyze the link between Fandoms & Subculture”. From what I understood, I have to support this statement with proper sources, so this week from my side was spent on trying to find legitimate sources from both online and Lynda (Lynda.com – from LinkedIn, 2019).

The other thing that I had done for CIU was once again working on the addition of more features for the game, this time though was a real doozy. The team and I discussed this idea and essentially decided to implement it. There would be different bosses, each one would have their own unique trait and would act accordingly. Since our theme is to address how a workplace is a harsh place, we thought that some bosses should have preferences to some races while ignoring the other race. This idea is still fresh but seems very promising for our game. This was somewhat inspired by the movie “Horrible Bosses” (Warnerbros.com, 2019).

Now from the studio side, I managed to implement the new look of the arena with the help of the game designer, I felt that a few weeks was more than enough time for him to set up the map, so, last class, I sat with him and told him to add his map to the game scene already. While it is not that impressive, I just wanted him to contribute to something in the main game.

The final thing that I managed to do was start working on Explosion. To give more context, I had the idea to add explosive barrels that if the player shoots, it would explode and deal and area-of-effect damage to all surrounding it. I started working on testing out the explosion and so far it seems pretty bugged out. So I’m going to be leaving it the way it is for now if however, it does not get better, I will probably scrap the idea altogether.

For next week, I plan to try and start on the collaboration work for another group that seemingly needs help for their pre-production final project, but I will get more details later on.

GPG230 Blog 5- Game Look Update & Project Pitch Presentation

This is week 5 and the progress I seem to have made a lot of stuff for the main game is compared to last week, so I’m not exactly ecstatic but am still satisfied with the work done. I also had done work on the CIU element, not only in terms of quantity but in quality as well.

First addressing the Studio Game, I created a simple Arena that the player would be able to fight in, a simple plane with walls surrounding it. While plain, it served its purpose as the player would not always fall off the map. I had also improved upon the shooting mechanic as well as added a Particle Effect (Technologies, 2019) for when it would hit an object.

I also worked on creating a UI display for the HealthBar and StaminaBar and this was done using a Slider (Technologies, 2019). I also created the Sprinting feature for the player which would use up stamina and added a jumping function, so now the player is finally a lot more mobile.

The final thing that I changed in the main game was that I added objects such as crates, barrels, boxes, etc. that were all from the Asset Store (Assetstore.unity.com, 2019) in Unity, which was made by ‘Gamer Squid‘ (Assetstore.unity.com, 2019).

Objects.JPG

As for CIU, we had just finished our Project Pitch Presentation for the Card Game idea we had. After receiving feedback, we decided to take the suggestions that we had received and added it to the list of things that could be made.

The CIU task for the week was to research a news article on a certain subculture of our own choosing, which I had picked “Gamers” and present to class our own thoughts. The presentation went better than I thought as everyone seemed to see what I was trying to state.

The last thing that was done for the week was discussing more on the Card Game mechanics which we ended up adding the feature of situations being random as well as character selection. We also got the idea for the characters being of different ethnicity.

This week has been really productive and I can only hope the pace can be kept.

GPG230 Blog 4- PHP Leaderboard Research & CIU Project Proposal

This is currently week four of studio three. I have worked on a few things that are worth mentioning, for both the CIU and Studio part.

For the CIU211 class, we had a class on “Post Structuralism” (En.wikipedia.org, 2019), to give a summarised version of an explanation proposes that one may understand human culture by means of a structure—modeled on language, that differs from concrete reality and from abstract ideas, usually a “third order” that mediates between the two. The work that was to be done for the class was a Response Report on Aesthetics that Seth and I had to create. It was very tedious to find the proper references from legitimate sources that we had to scour for in the online library, Lynda (Lynda.com – from LinkedIn, 2019), but eventually, we found some and managed to finish the report.

For the Group CIU Project, the group and I managed to create a Project Proposal, which was essentially summarising what our idea was and how it would work.

As for my Studio 3 unit, I started Research on PHP (En.wikipedia.org, 2019) which would be used for my leaderboard in the game. This would be used to store data of the player and this is useful for my Register and Login that I plan to add to the game. I plan to use XAMPP (Apachefriends.org, 2019) which is a free web server package developed, consisting mainly of a server and database for scripts written in the PHP.

XAMPP.JPG

Other than that I also started working on a basic shooting script for the main game that involves the player being able to shoot a projectile out of an object.

By next week, I hope to accomplish more tasks for both the main game and my CIU. I also need to start looking for collaboration.

GPG230 Blog 3- Main Game Setup & CIU Idea/Poster

This week was focused on me working on a poster and setting up the base for the studio game. To give more context on this, let’s first start with the CIU stuff.

For CIU211, my group and I had started discussing ways in which we can do our group project and we eventually settled on making an actual game, not a digital one. The topic we have chosen revolved around the workplace and how discrimination is present in it.  The way we planned to do it is in the form of a card/board game, similar to Game Of Life (En.wikipedia.org, 2019) and Monopoly (En.wikipedia.org, 2019). We also 4 main characters that the player would be able to choose from and added certain ideas such as there being different situations where we would have each character respond differently, but that is still to be discussed properly.

The other thing that was worked on was the poster as the “homework” for this week. We had just finished a class on the topic “Post Modernism” and we had to make a poster to reflect on it. My CIU member Sethiel Cosio and I worked on it and I have to say that I’m quite proud as to how it turned out.

PM_Poster.jpeg

As for the main game, so far, I have managed to create a simple First Person Controller to control the movement of the player as well as a Camera Controller for controlling the rotation of the camera on the player. I had also set up and created a Github (GitHub, 2019) repository so that my Game Designer could have access to the game files and can be updated or even update his own changes.

Github.JPG

Finally, I started research on how to implement Photon Networking in the Main game, this will be the challenge as I would need to make it so that a player is able to join another player in one scene and it must sync properly. I followed the steps taken in a tutorial to make a scene where someone could join a room set up by the main host and it seems to work well. Hopefully, by next week, I would probably have completed more in relation to the Studio Game.
